Αre you a Drawer or a Smudge-Handler?

Which part of your mind do you use when you want to change?

Το better understand how most of us operate, just do the following experiment:

Fold a blank page in the middle. Fold it again in the middle. And now fold it once again for a third time. Take a pen and fill this little piece of blank paper with a smudge that you will draw. Cover most of the surface with this smudge. Now try to draw something specific that you like ON the smudge (for example, a flower). No matter how beautifully the flower is drawn, you may observe that every time you look at the paper, what you mainly see is the smudge.

Now unfold the paper to its original size and draw the flower again on the whole surface. Observe that, although the smudge still remains in the corner of the paper, when you look at the whole paper you now mostly observe the flower, not the smudge.

Most of the people who want το change, fall into the trap of trying the first way: In order to change, they use the same mindset which they want to change! In other words, they try to draw something new ON the smudge! Οr, they invest much time & energy on trying to REMOVE the smudge first, with long analyses of ‘problems, ‘route-causes’, and of the past in general. But people who know how to change in order to achieve whatever they want, do something different: They don’t bother with the smudge, apart from becoming aware that it’s there and observing how it affects them. Their key difference is that they have learnt how to ‘unfold the paper’, using the unexploited part of their mind, to draw on it whatever they want, from scratch.
