5 specific Actions to foster your team’s Motivation

Motivation cannot be forced or created for others, as it is an internal drive fueled by beliefs and emotions.

Using David Rock’s ‘SCARF’ (+1) model you can maximize the impact you may have as a leader in fostering your team’s motivation:

1. Status: check regularly in what ways you practically show your team members the importance of their role to you.

2. Certainty: explain to your team what exactly they need to do in order to be successful In their role. Give regular feedback based on this ‘look of success’.

3. Autonomy: list your specific actions to provide your people the required breathing space and sense of control over their own time and choices.

4. Relatedness: plan the best-fitted way to build and maintain the required level of rapport and affinity between each team member to you as well as between themselves.

5. Fairness: ask for regular feedback from people to check how they feel about the way they and their work is treated versus what they have in their minds. Work to bridge any potential perception gaps.

+1. Competence: make sure people get roles that are supported by their natural preference and that they have been trained to have the required skills.
